The Internet Is a Dangerous Place

The Internet Is a Dangerous Place

Click here to view my Screencast-O-Matic on social media etiquette in which I used Shaquille O'Neal as my example. My project was based around NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal when he posted a side-by-side image of him making a face with another person who suffers from a rare genetic disorder. Watch a quick video here for a quick understanding of what has happened. This occurred in 2014 and although it was an awful thing to do the big man Shaq had a great enough reputation that it has already been swept up in the past. He posted a tweet explaining that he called and personally apologized to Jahmel Binion and although he issued an apology he was later taken to court. Social media can be great for many reasons but when people decide to use it for the wrong reason feelings can be hurt and reputations can often be damaged. Shaquille O'Neal is an icon of the NBA not only due to his accolades as an athlete but, also for his appearances in movies and even knowledge of the sport. He is a "hero" to many people and he must understand that anything he does can be perceived as hurtful to many people.
